Why Teaching with Equity?

Many educators have heard the term “culturally responsive pedogagy” and have thought about ways to bring diverse voices, backgrounds and thoughts into our classrooms. We know this is the right thing to do, however too often the work stops there.

Personally, I have spent time doing my own work, reading a varitey of social justice texts, and thinking about how that can impact what happens in leadership, schools and classrooms. The pandemic has highlighted a plethora of inequities in our schools and classrooms. As we move forward it is my hope that we don’t just go back to normal. I hope that we build back better. Maya Angelou said, “Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.” I think that if we do the work, then we can do better. We can build better schools to help build a better community.
